How to Keep Your Food Safe!

Is it just me, or am I the only one who gets in the mood to cook once I see a mini recipe on Facebook or Instagram? My favorite page to follow is Tasty on Facebook, but what I'm trying to say is that I enjoy cooking once in awhile. I would be able to make something that I enjoy, and I didn't have to go out and buy something. When it comes to cooking, we have to remember that there's certain rules while your preparing/cooking your meal. According to Foodsafety.gov "Some foods are more frequently associated with food poisoning or foodborne illness." (2018) So this means that we have to be extra careful with how we treat our food. We have to make sure we clean our hands and entire cleaning area, and wash any fruits or vegetables that will be used. MAKE SURE YOU SEPARATE YOUR FOOD! don't let any juices from raw food touch any food that is ready to eat or else it'll get cross contaminated. Make sure your food is cooked at the proper temperature and this hyperlink https://www.foodsafety.gov/keep/charts/mintemp.html will tell you certain temperatures for cooking meat, poultry, seafood, and other foods. When you're all done eating, make sure you refrigerate your leftovers so the cold temperatures can keep the harmful bacteria away. The longer you leave food out in the open, the more bacteria that'll grow on it. Some tips would be for meats to be cooked thoroughly to keep away the most harmful bacteria, but it could get contaminated again if not stored properly. For turkey, you have to make sure its thawed, prepared, cooked, and stored properly. With chicken, you have to wash it and make sure its cooked at the proper temperature. Fruits and vegetable juices must be treated to kill bacteria, and seafood also have to be cooked thoroughly to keep away bacteria. All in all, this information is important for us because if we don't handle our food right, we will face the consequences. Most of these foods have bacteria like E.Coli, samonella, and listeria. All of them can make us sick, so in order for that not to happen we have to treat our food responsibly, and remember the keys of success to keep our food from getting bacteria.

  1. Some people are really careless when it comes to cooking. I remember spending the night over someone's house and I never seen their dad wash his hands. He cooked something for us, but I was really hesitant to eat it. My friend asked me why I wasn't eating, and I told her that her dad doesn't wash his hands. I'm not that bold of a person now, but I was really young back then and I wasn't afraid to say something. Anyway, she got mad and told me he always washes his hands before he cooks. I could only imagine what kind of germs would be on our food if he didn't wash them. People say that extremely high temperatures kill off bacteria, but that still doesn't mean you don't have to wash your hands.

More people need to have this mentality, and this post really does explain a lot for those who aren't aware of food safety. I'm looking forward to reading about other tips you have.

  2. First of all, I loved how you introduced your blog post. It was super casual and appealing to the audience. Most anybody who reads this blog will be able to relate with the love to cook. I do not have much experience, but I am definitely a cook-in-training. Food safety is something that most people do not think twice about when cooking. I know for me personally, I assume that I will never actually get sick. I definitely take proper precaution when it comes to cooking meats at the right temperature, but am also guilty of eating raw cookie dough (whoops). I love how you shared practical steps to food safety such as keeping your foods separated. The link about food temperature was a very helpful resource as well.Overall, great post!

  3. I sometimes get the feeling where I want to cook. Most of the time is when I am at school and I do not have access to a properly stocked kitchen. I also really like watching the video recipes on Facebook, I even saved a couple because I want to try them. I have used a couple and it turned out really good. However, there is important issues to be aware of when cooking. I got food poisoning in high school once and it was one of the worst experiences ever. It onset very quickly and I had to call in to work to I wouldn't make it. I was miserable and it was awful. I think we need to be aware of how we store food, make sure we treat it properly when cooking, and then also make sure we cook it fully because being sick from something you ate is unfortunate and also can cause us not to like that food anymore.
Look forward to your next post.

  4. Italia,

I think we all have seen those 50 second videos of people cooking something that looks so amazing, but in reality it probably took them AT LEAST 20 minutes to prepare everything. I personally love cooking, I meal prep at the beginning of each week so that I have more to choose from instead of what's offered at the dining halls. When you think about food safety, a lot of people forget how important it is. Washing your hands every time you handle raw food and washing down the counters. There's so many precautions you need to take in order to protect yourself from food-borne illnesses. Using a thermometer when you cook is a great tool, and it has honestly become my best friend when I cook because from what I've heard, salmonella isn't the most fun to have! Great post, I really enjoyed it!

  5. Italia, it's great that you made a post about how to keep your food safe because food borne illnesses could really mess a person up! It's extremely important that people know how to take care of their food, because there are places where people have no clue how to take of their food, I witnessed it before and these experiences were at fast food restaurant.

  6. This is a great post Italia. I actually love cooking as well and try not to always buy fast food. I was never really the type to look at different recipes but maybe I should start. I always cook what my mom has taught me to cook when I was back home. When I do cook, I always go the extra mile and make sure i clean my cooking space and my food thoroughly. It is important to make sure everything is clean because food-borne illness is no joke! I learned about E.coli, salmonella, bacteria, etc when I took a Microbiology class here. All the same things you said in your post is the exact same things that I learned in that class. Great post!

  7. Great post, I definitely think food safety is very important when cooking. I love to cook and I always try to take these precautions. When I'm watching people cook and they don't do the same it gives me anxiety ever since I got food poisoning a while back. That was the worst experience ever!

  8. I love watching the food videos too. Sometimes I will watch them for hours and get so hungry after! I liked how you mentioned make sure to watch fruits and veggies. Most of the time I don't because I don't want to eat a wet strawberry or have my blueberries wet. I definitely should start washing my produce in hopes to wash off bacteria. I buy organic so sometimes I think I don't need to, or I'm so crazy and I think that the dirt/other things on the veggies are good for nutrition. After reading this post, I'll be more careful!
    Good Job
